Our efforts to prevent erosion and preserve wildlife along a stretch of Lake Michigan’s coast recently earned accolades from the Chicagoland Associated General Contractors (CAGC).
As part of its 2024 Projects of the Year celebration, CAGC recognized Michels Construction, Inc.’s Illinois Beach State Park Shoreline Stabilization project with the Excellence in Environmental Design-Build award. The selection committee was impressed with all facets of the successful undertaking, which employed innovative techniques to protect the last remaining natural shoreline in Illinois.
Rather than circumventing erosion by building walls or prominent coastal structures to prevent the movement of sand altogether, the design instead redirects it via 24 offshore breakwaters. The crew placed more than 750,000 tons of sand and 320,000 tons of stone, sourcing much of the quartzite and limestone from Michels’ quarries in Wisconsin.
Partnering with Living Habitats, a landscape architecture studio, we built custom eco-blocks wrapped in natural materials and strategically dispersed them to support aquatic species. Additionally, nests were positioned atop the breakwaters to nurture a healthy population of terns.
This project exemplifies Michels’ commitment to preserving and improving the environments in which we work and live. In addition to this award, the project was also named one of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association’s 2024 Best Restored Beaches.
