Michels builds inroads to Wisconsin DBEs

Michels Road & Stone crews operate on I-41 near Milwaukee.

A new webpage showcasing opportunities for small businesses owned by geographically, economically and socially disadvantaged individuals is the latest destination on Michels’ roadmap for inclusion and social responsibility.

The Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Opportunities page provides current information about Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) projects, highlights diverse-spend goals and features a form through which to send a quote for working with us. Michels Road & Stone, Inc. and our Supplier Diversity team collaborated to create this online tool to support Michels’ commitment to serving the communities in which we live and work.

Michels Road & Stone has consistently worked to meet and exceed diverse-spend goals on WisDOT projects. For example, the company achieved 25 percent DBE participation against a 4 percent target, earning WisDOT’s Golden Shovel Award in 2022 for exemplary efforts and actions in the implementation of DBE Program principles and desired outcomes.

This recognition highlights the importance of partnering with diverse contractors in today’s competitive landscape, where genuine partnerships get results and good faith efforts alone are not sufficient to secure projects.

“The good working relationship and open communication with Michels have been crucial to our success,” said Ann Neshek, Vice President of Arrow-Crete Construction, LLC in Milwaukee. “The opportunity to work on numerous projects over the past 23 years, including mega projects, has helped us grow and realize our capabilities.”

Arrow-Crete Construction is one of more than 1,000 subcontractors, suppliers and professional services in Michels’ diverse supplier network—a database that continues to grow.

“By fostering relationships with diverse suppliers and subcontractors, we can meet or exceed our customers’ diverse-spend goals while encouraging the growth and success of disadvantaged companies, our own operations and the industries we serve,” said Supplier Diversity Manager Brian Mitchell. “Michels Road & Stone’s initiatives to incorporate diverse businesses reflect our policy to lead and advocate for the creation of inclusive opportunities within the industry.”

Through strategies like adopting a Supplier Diversity Policy, sustainable procurement practices and community outreach efforts, the Michels Family of Companies aims to remain responsive to the evolving requirements of the construction industry nationwide.
