A Michels Power, Inc. crew building foundations on an electrical transmission line project in northern New York collected beverage containers to benefit a children’s fishing derby and the environment.
Since late 2021, about 60 foundation crew members working on the project have been collecting soft drink, water and other beverage cans and bottles to donate the 5-cent New York State returnable deposit from each to support the Trout Lake Rod and Gun Club’s rock bass kids fishing derby held annually on the first Saturday in August. The Robert Noble Davis Memorial Fishing Derby, held on Trout Lake, was started in 1976 by Robert Davis.
The Davis family supplied a small utility trailer for the employees’ donations to use in the Edwards yard. A sign installed on the trailer reminds people to drop off their bottles for a good cause. The donations are also reducing environmental impact by providing a convenient collection site for the returnable cans and bottles that sometimes becomes roadside litter or fill the local landfills.
The money raised from the donated cans and bottles will help offset the cost of awarding small prizes, such as fishing poles, fishing tackle, trophies and other items, to all of the children who participate.
