Highway 190 HDD
Michels Trenchless, Inc. used horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to install 6,480 feet of 30-inch steel pipe in clay sand under a railroad track, multiple streams, and a wetland area.
After two unsuccessful attempts to complete the crossing, Michels Trenchless, Inc. mobilized to the site. Using the pilot hole intersect method with drills on both sides of the proposed alignment, Michels Trenchless, Inc. redrilled the bore hole and pulled the pipe into place in about one month.
Bore grout was placed in the section of the HDD hole under the railroad crossing to provide additional support. A gyro guidance system was used to ensure the bored path followed the engineered alignment.
