Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport Runway Rehabilitation

Michels Road & Stone, Inc. extended the life into Runway 18/36 at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport. The rehabilitation project required significant repair to deteriorating concrete pavement on the north-south runway.  

Since roughly 100 flights take off and land daily and because 18/36 is one of the airport’s two runways, Michels worked diligently to meet project milestones and minimize interruptions to aircraft operations. Our crews operated with two excavators to efficiently remove the old concrete and two concrete paving machines at a time. The first paver provided the initial spread of concrete, ensuring uniform thickness to place the wire mesh needed to withstand the loading and impact from aircraft. Crew members placed this grid of steel reinforcement within 30 minutes of the second paver paving over the top of the mesh. The total thickness of the concrete reached 16 inches.  

Michels Road & Stone was supported by Michels Trenchless, Inc. for the rehabilitation of two culvert pipes that cross under the north-south runway and parallel taxiway, totaling 1,974 feet.
