Michels Road & Stone, Inc.’s extensive work on nearly 2 miles of a busy interstate in Milwaukee County, WI was recognized as one of The Daily Reporter’s Top Projects of 2023.
The Zoo Interchange North Leg project expanded the freeway from three to four lanes in each direction and included the construction of bridges, a railroad overpass, noise walls, retaining walls and sign structures. Innovative technology, strategic scheduling and staging efficiencies, as well as pavement recycling contributed to the project’s success.
The award nomination, submitted by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), called attention to our ability to deliver the highly complex project on time, on budget, and with minimal public disruption. WisDOT also praised our excellent work with managing the schedule, coordinating subcontractors and keeping open the lines of communication among everyone involved.
WisDOT’s nomination cited Michels’ commitment to safety for the contractors, the traveling public and construction engineers, highlighting our decision to keep two dedicated safety managers on the project for its full duration.
We thank all the Michels people and our partners for your conscientious work on a complex project that will positively impact travelers in approximately 144,000 vehicles a day.
