DOT recognizes Michels’ work on Wisconsin’s busiest interchange

Zoo Interchange being repaved and constructed in Milwaukee.

Michels Road & Stone, Inc. was recently honored with an Excellence in Construction Award by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) for work that improved traffic flow through the state’s busiest highway interchange.

Michels received the Large Construction Contract Award for our work on the Zoo Interchange North Leg, along Highway 45 between Swan Boulevard and Burleigh Street, in Milwaukee County. The project expanded nearly 2 miles of highway from three to four lanes in each direction and reconstructed the North Avenue interchange. The project lasted three full construction seasons, making management of interim traffic patterns critical to long-term success. Michels partnered with WisDOT to deliver this highly complex project on time, on budget and with minimal public disruption.

We thank all the Michels people who contributed to this successful project, WisDOT for giving us the opportunity to showcase our abilities to tackle large-scale projects and the surrounding communities that worked closely with us. Michels was among six contractors honored with Excellence in Construction Awards for 2023.

Michels Road & Stone was previously recognized with an Excellence in Construction Award in 2016 for our first-phase work on the Zoo Interchange project as well as in 2019 for our large contract work on the Interstate 94 North-South Freeway project in Racine and Kenosha counties.
