Kenosha Regional Airport Reconstruction
As prime contractor, Michels Road & Stone, Inc. self-performed all excavation, pipe underdrain, aggregate placing, concrete pavement, and topsoil operations to completely reconstruct and extend the main east/west runway and taxiway for the airport. The runway was extended 1,100 feet to allow for larger aircraft to safely land and take off.
Crews used already excavated dirt on site, considerably reducing the amount of trucking needed. Michels also used mobile recycle-crushing equipment to custom crush the old concrete runway and taxiway into the base aggregate used on site, using different compaction methods to reach the required aggregate density. A “dry pond” was excavated and graded to drain the entire east half of the site without allowing for sitting water to limit the frequency of wildlife on the airport’s grounds.
The 100-foot-wide project was paved using the stringless method in three passes of 33 feet. Stringless paving results in smoother surfaces, allowing the work to comply with the tight tolerances of airport runway projects.
