Center to Grand Forks T-Line
Michels Power, Inc. built approximately 250 miles of new high-voltage (345 kV) AC transmission line from the existing Center 345 kV substation at the Milton R. Young Station to the existing Prairie substation. The project enabled the transmission of energy from the existing Young 2 Power Station directly to the service territory and cooperative members.
Michels Power erected 1,334 steel structures, the majority of which were single-pole, single-circuit, self-weathering tubular steel that oxidize or rust to form a dark reddish-brown surface coating that protects the structure from further weathering. The steel single poles were placed on large concrete caisson foundations.
Michels Power faced many challenges including frigid North Dakota winters and a Missouri River Crossing.
