Dane County Regional Airport Reconstruction
Michels Road & Stone, Inc. completed a critical infrastructure upgrade at the Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, WI, involving the reconstruction of 51,475 square yards of 16-inch concrete pavement on aging taxiways and hold bays. The 16-inch thickness of the new pavement adds longevity and durability to the runways, which are utilized by both commercial and military aircraft alike. The project also included relocating several hold lines to meet new FAA regulations, installing a new runway weather information system (RWIS) and repairing pavement along the main runway. The work required several week-long taxiway closures and precise coordination to remove and replace pavement, relocate in-pavement lighting, regrade surfaces and apply new markings, all while ensuring minimal disruption to airport operations.
Despite some challenges—including inconsistent subgrades, tight time constraints, and continuous coordination with Air Traffic Control and subcontractors—the Michels team successfully completed the project within specification limits. Stringless paving technology was employed to ensure accurate concrete placement at depths reaching more than 20 inches. The project not only enhanced the airport’s safety and operational capacity, but also improved its ability to handle weather-related delays with the installation of the RWIS. Ultimately, the reconstruction work ensures the Dane County Regional Airport remains a vital and efficient asset for the greater Madison area and its growing travel needs.
