While Michels Construction, Inc. is well known for delivering high-quality structures, we also work hard to build a better environment. Our recent project to stop shoreline erosion in Zion, IL showcases our commitment to promoting a healthy seabird population and supporting aquatic environments in Lake Michigan.
We used innovative techniques, such as eco-blocks wrapped in natural materials and strategically placed driftwood, to create a habitat where aquatic species can thrive. With the placement of 10 tern nests, we are helping to encourage a robust population of these birds. Advanced GPS technology was employed to ensure the precise placement of all habitat elements.
This was the largest Illinois Department of Natural Resources project to date, providing nearly 2 miles of restored beachfront for the state in three different areas. More than 320,000 tons of stone material and 750,000 tons of sand were placed for beach nourishment. About half of the stone was sourced from a Michels quarry in Waterloo, WI.
These efforts exemplify Michels’ core value of preserving and improving the environments where we live and work. The project was recognized as one of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association’s 2024 Best Restored Beaches and in 2023 received Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines (WEDG) verification, the first Midwest, first Great Lakes and first breakwaters project to earn this rigorous technical verification.
